Are drones allowed in Indonesia?

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of Indonesia, the use of drones is permitted, but must adhere to strict regulations set forth by the DGCA.

Drone laws Indonesia list:

  • Maximum flying altitude is 150 meters (= 500 feet), with permission required to fly higher 14 working days before flight.
  • Drone flights must be conducted within the pilot’s direct line of sight and have a maximum horizontal distance and FPV.
  • Aviation liability insurance is not required for your drone.
  • Drones must have a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of no more than 7 kilograms.
  • Flights are permitted only in uncontrolled airspace and runways at airports must be at least 15 kilometers away.
  • Safe distances must be maintained from crowds and densely populated areas, with a minimum distance of 150 meters (vertical) or 600 meters (horizontal) between the ground and clouds.
  • Drones equipped with cameras must maintain a minimum distance of 500 meters from prohibited or restricted areas.
  • Drones are only permitted to operate during daylight and good visibility (minimum of 4.8 kilometers) and not at night or in inclement weather.
  • If a drone is equipped with a camera, it may approach the land border up to a maximum distance of 500 meters.
Drones may not be operated from a moving vehicle, except for vessels (boats, ships).

Off the record

Flying drones in Indonesia is always not problematic, but it's advisable to obtain permission from property owners or pay a fee for flying in some locations. For instance, flying in Jatiluwih Rice Terraces may require a fee of 500k IDR. Additionally, it is advisable to obtain consent from those who will be near the drone during its operation.
