Are drones allowed in Faroe Islands?

Yes, drones are allowed in Faroe Islands, but private individuals must abide by the regulations set forth by the Danish Air Navigation Act, as described in legislation BL 9-4. These regulations outline specific rules regarding distances from public aerodromes and military airbases, built-up areas and major public roads, flight level, overflying densely built-up areas or areas with a large number of people gathered in the open air, and remaining within sight of the operator at all times. Additionally, three particularly sensitive natural resorts in Faroe Islands, as referred to in BL 7-16, must not be overflown.

According to the Danish Air Navigation Act, private individuals flying drones in Faroe Islands must abide by the following rules:

  • The distance to the runway/runways of a public aerodrome must be at least 5 km*
  • The distance to the runway/runways of a military airbase must be at least 8 km
  • The distance to built-up areas and major public roads must be at least 150m
  • Flight level must not exceed 100m above the ground
  • Densely built-up areas and areas in which a large number of people are gathered in the open air must not be overflown
  • The drone must remain within sight of the operator at all times
